Mastering Your TSG Video Diaries: Timeless Tips from Director of Judges, Kelly Wolcott

Mastering Your TSG Video Diaries

Every competition season, new competitors in The Skin Games have the same burning question:

“What exactly do the judges want to see in the video diary portion?”

Whether you’re a first-time competitor or returning to perfect your craft, this part of the case study process can feel nerve-wracking. The camera, the structure, the deadlines — it’s a lot.

That’s why we’re revisiting some of the best advice ever shared on the topic — insights from Kelly Wolcott, Director of Judges for The Skin Games. Kelly first covered these points during a competitor session last year, and her guidance continues to be one of the most valuable resources for every new season.

The Skin Games: More Than a Competition

As Kelly put it, “The Skin Games is one of a kind — it’s not just about results. It’s about showcasing your skill, your knowledge, and your heart.”

This international skincare competition and award show gives beauty professionals around the world the opportunity to showcase their artistry and expertise. Your case study allows you to communicate across multiple formats:

  • Before & after photos
  • A written case study
  • Eight video diaries
  • (And for finalists) a live interview at the event

The video diaries, in particular, are where your passion and personality come to life. They’re your chance to talk directly to the judges and show your professional voice in motion.

What the Judges Are Looking For

The Video diary is worth 20 points total and each video is no more than two minutes long.

There are eight required topics; you’ll find the full list of video topics and guidelines in the official case study instructions here:

TSG25/26 Video topics

Kelly emphasized four key qualities that judges love to see:

  • Clarity – Speak naturally, but stay on topic.
  • Confidence – Smile! Even if you’re nervous, positive energy comes through on camera.
  • Consistency – Make sure your videos reflect the same progress shown in your written case study and photos.
  • Personality – Let your authenticity shine. The Skin Games celebrates individuality — we want to see you!

Kelly’s pro tip:

“If you’re doing a voiceover, smile while you talk — it changes how your voice sounds and your energy will come through.”

Filming & Submitting Like a Pro

  • Record in landscape (horizontal) — Videos perform better on judging platforms and can be repurposed for marketing.
  • Stay under two minutes per video — Judges may stop watching at the limit.
  • Upload via WeTransfer or Smash through the TSG Media Upload page.
  • Double-check your YouTube playlist afterward to ensure every file appears correctly under your name and category.

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

Every year, Kelly and the judging team see the same avoidable mistakes:

  • Submitting videos after the January 20 deadline
  • Forgetting one or more required topics
  • Filming vertically instead of horizontally
  • Uploading clips that don’t match your written content
  • Sounding overly scripted — authenticity always wins

Why the Video Diaries Matter

Your written case study shows what you did.

Your photos show results.

But your video diaries? They show who you are.

This portion of your case study lets you share your approach, your professionalism, your understanding of ingredients and modalities — and your ability to communicate it all.

Kelly reminded competitors that the videos are also powerful marketing tools:

“Mention your favorite products, modalities, or equipment. Just be sure to include why you chose them and what they do. Judges — and potential clients — want to understand your reasoning.”

Kelly’s Final Tips for Success

  • Start early – Don’t wait until the week before the deadline. You’ll need time to review and refine.
  • Proof your content – Ask a trusted colleague to watch your videos for clarity and flow.
  • Keep it genuine – The goal isn’t perfection; it’s connection.
  • Finish strong – Every point counts. Follow the guidelines to get the best score possible!

Key Dates to Remember

  • Start your case study: by November 15
  • Final submission deadline: January 20 (no extensions)
