Hey Skin Fam!
Thinking about competing in The Skin Games for the first time? Maybe you’re feeling a mix of excitement and maybe just a little bit of nerves? Totally normal! Taking that first step into a global competition can feel like a big deal, but trust us, it’s an experience that can seriously impact your career journey.
We’ve seen so many incredible professionals go through this process, and we’ve gathered some wisdom from past competitors and our amazing judges’ panels. So, if you’re a Skin Games rookie, here are some tips to help you make the most of your first time:
1. Just Say YES (Even When It Feels Scary!)
This might be the most important step. Many past competitors, like Aggie Singh (Esthetician of the Year!), shared that their incredible journeys started with the simple decision to say “yes” to applying and participating. Don’t let fear hold you back! The biggest growth often happens outside your comfort zone.
2. Document EVERYTHING – Your Journey is the Story.
Every step you take, from choosing your category to working with your client and documenting results, is part of your story. Show the process, the challenges, and the victories. Use high-quality before-and-after photos and videos. Remember to follow the rules carefully for documentation, including timestamping your photos and adhering to video length requirements. “Your visibility equals your credibility,” as our Director of Judges, Kelly Walcott, put it.
3. Read Those Rules (Seriously, Read Them!)
We know it might not be the most exciting part, but understanding the competition rules is crucial! Judges emphasize that points can be lost for not following instructions, even on small details. If you have questions, reach out! The Skin Games team and the community are here to help you understand everything.
4. Lean into the Community and Find a Mentor.
You are absolutely not alone on this journey. The Skin Games community is full of supportive professionals. Don’t be afraid to connect, ask questions, and learn from others. Finding a mentor, whether it’s a seasoned professional or someone who’s competed before, can provide invaluable guidance and support. Attend the monthly Zooms and community meetups!
5. Consistency and Practice Make Progress.
Mastering your technique and achieving great results takes dedication. Be consistent in your practice and put in the work. As judges in the sugaring panel noted, perfecting your skill is key. Remember, success doesn’t always happen overnight, but showing up and putting in consistent effort is how you build momentum.
6. Stay True to Your Passion and Niche.
What are you most passionate about in skincare? Focus on that for your entry. Competing in a category that genuinely excites you will shine through in your work and your documentation. Authenticity is key.
7. Prioritize Your Well-being.
Competing can be demanding, requiring time and energy. Remember to maintain a healthy work-life balance and prioritize your mental and physical health. Don’t feel guilty for scheduling in personal time!
8. Leverage the Experience for Career Growth.
Win or not, participating in The Skin Games is a powerful way to gain exposure and credibility in the industry. Use your participation in your marketing, share your journey with your clients, and leverage the connections you make.
Taking the leap to compete is a brave and rewarding step. The Skin Games is designed to be a platform for you to learn, grow, and showcase your amazing talent. We can’t wait to see what you bring to the table!
Game on!
