Mastering-Ingredient-Knowledge-A-Guide-for-Estheticians-to-Elevate-Client-Conversations

As skincare and the professional skincare industry evolves, estheticians play a crucial role in guiding clients through the maze of ingredients. That is why are Dermeasthetics we’re so committed to proper training and education beyond the product label. Being a Korean American skincare company, we’ve learned to view things from many approaches to science, skin, and peeling. By combining the benefits of western and eastern care, Dermaestheitcs sets all of our professionals up for success, especially in creating elevated experiences. you’re your customers. Educating clients about the impact of ingredients on their skin fosters trust and empowers informed decisions. Through my experience in life and education, here are 7 tips that have helped me engage and enhancing my ingredient knowledge to deliver transformative client conversations:

  1. Speak the Language of Understanding:
Before delving into the scientific intricacies, gauge your client’s familiarity with skincare terminology. Assess their comfort with technical terms and adjust your language accordingly. Ensure that your explanations are accessible, using layman’s terms to convey the benefits of specific ingredients. For instance, instead of diving straight into the term “retinoids,” you might opt for an explanation like “Vitamin A derivatives known for their effectiveness in smoothing fine lines and promoting skin renewal.” Meet them where they are at.
  2. Tailor Information to Skin Concerns:
Connect ingredient benefits directly to your client’s skin goals and concerns. Tailor your explanations to address their specific concerns, making the information relevant to their unique skincare journey. Link ingredients to the targeted resolution of their individual skin issues. For example, when discussing brightening ingredients, emphasize how specifically ascorbic acid and not all vitamin C effectively targets dark spots, fostering an overall radiant complexion.
  3. Highlight Multifunctional Ingredients:
Spotlight ingredients with multiple benefits to showcase their value. Explain how these ingredients go beyond singular purposes to simplify skincare routines and offer comprehensive care. For instance, when discussing hyaluronic acid, emphasize not only its hydrating properties but also its ability to plump the skin, thereby reducing the appearance of fine lines. By doing so, you not only provide a detailed truism but also share how this ingredient would impact their own skin by consistent use.
  4. Engage your clients Emotionally
Craft compelling narratives around ingredients to make them memorable and relatable. Share success stories from other clients who have experienced transformative results. Engage your clients emotionally by creating a connection between them and the efficacy of skincare ingredients. For example, when discussing our hearts at Dermaesthetics, we share one of our core mantras, “Unveiling beauty Through Science.” This may sound like we are specifically talking about exterior beauty but we explain that this “beauty” is the inner beauty of self-confidence; and that when we are able to resolve a skin concern that was bringing down a person’s self-esteem, their inner beauty of who they truly are resounds in flourishes in the whole being. We are relational people and we often forget that. At the same time, we do not want to take any of this knowledge and be unauthentic. Playing with people’s emotions is a dangerous thing and shouldn’t be abused to make a sale.
  5. Clarify Misconceptions:
Proactively address common misconceptions surrounding certain ingredients. Offer clear explanations to dispel myths and ensure your clients have accurate information. Be transparent about potential side effects or reactions, setting realistic expectations for the outcomes of incorporating specific ingredients into their routine. For instance, when discussing exfoliants like glycolic acid, clarify that, when used correctly, they can be gentle, revealing smoother, glowing skin without causing irritation. Share the good and the bad. This may cause people not to take on services or purchase some items but this is far better than people purchasing and not knowing the potential risks.
  6. Stay Updated:
Skincare is a rapidly evolving field, and staying informed about the latest ingredients is essential. At Dermaesthetics, we regularly update our professionals with knowledge to confidently answer client queries and provide the most recent recommendations. Whether it’s a new antioxidant or a breakthrough in natural alternatives, staying current allows you to offer cutting-edge advice. For instance, you might share the latest buzz about bakuchiol, a potent natural alternative to retinol or GHK-CU Copper Peptides, tranexamic acid, or others that are quickly gaining the attention of search bars throughout the world.
  7. Encourage Engagement:
Foster an environment of curiosity and collaboration by inviting questions and open discussions about skincare ingredients. Empower your clients to actively participate in their skincare journey by sharing experiences and seeking clarification. Encourage them to inquire about the ingredients in their products and express their concerns or preferences. Reinforce the idea that their involvement is integral to achieving the best results, creating a sense of ownership and collaboration in their skincare routine. Question everything. By doing so, you will take your practice and your client’s skin to new horizons and I can assure you that your sense of purpose and joy will be that much greater.

By mastering the art of sharing ingredient knowledge, estheticians not only enhance client relationships but also contribute to a skincare journey rooted in understanding and trust. Keep the dialogue open, simplify complexities, and weave ingredient stories that resonate with your Client unique skin aspirations.
